Those first days with your baby are unlike anything else, soft, quiet, and somehow fleeting all at once.

Most parents reach out feeling equal parts excited and unsure.

What will the session be like? Will my baby cooperate? What should we wear?

The truth is, your newborn session is designed to feel calm, guided, and effortless from beginning to end. You don’t need to have anything figured out before you arrive.

Here’s exactly what you can expect.

A Calm, Baby-Led Experience

Newborn sessions are never rushed.

Newborns set the pace, and everything is built around their comfort. There’s time for feeding, soothing, and settling, because that’s simply part of this stage.

Rather than forcing poses, I gently guide your baby into natural, comfortable positions that reflect how they truly are in these early days.

The result is imagery that feels soft, organic, and timeless.

A Light-Filled, Minimal Setting

The environment is intentionally simple. This is likely in your family room, your nursery, your master bedroom.

Those tiny details of little fingers and toes are done with soft whites, natural textures which allow your baby to remain the focus without distraction.

Whether your session takes place in a bright suburban home or a historic apartment, the goal is always the same

to create imagery that feels refined, effortless, and enduring.

What Your Baby Will Wear

Most newborns are photographed in soft neutral colored wraps, simple knits or minimally styled, natural looks you might already have at home. I bring multiple wraps and blankets for you to choose from. Nothing stiff or overly styled, just textures that feel gentle and timeless. Every detail is chosen to photograph beautifully while keeping your baby comfortable.

What Parents Should Wear

This is often the biggest question and it’s simpler than you think.

For a cohesive, elevated look, I recommend soft ivory, cream, or light neutral tones, linen or cotton fabrics, minimal patterns. Flowing dresses for moms and simple, well-fitted pieces for dads always photograph beautifully. The goal is not to “match,” but to feel naturally connected and timeless.

Gentle Guidance Throughout the Session

You will never be left wondering what to do. I will guide you through every moment, how to hold your baby, where to place your hands, how to interact naturally. Nothing is overly posed or forced. Instead, we create space for genuine connection while subtly shaping the moment.

Timing and Length of the Session

Newborn sessions are most often scheduled within the first two weeks after birth, when babies tend to be especially sleepy and naturally curled.

If you’re drawn to those soft, peaceful, “sleepy baby” images, this window typically allows for the most flexibility in achieving that look, as wake windows begin to lengthen as babies grow.

That said, there is no “wrong” time to photograph your baby.

Some families choose to have me come in as early as just a few days old, while others prefer to wait a few weeks until they’ve had time to settle in at home. I regularly photograph babies anywhere from just a four days old to around six weeks, and each stage carries its own kind of beauty.

Sessions are always baby-led and unhurried, typically lasting around 90 minutes to two hours to allow time for feeding, soothing, and natural pauses along the way. I always suggest to block off at least two hours of your day and to not have a bunch of visitors or doctor appointments on that day.

The End Result: Timeless, Heirloom Imagery

The goal is not just to take photos.

It’s to preserve what this season actually felt like, the softness, the stillness, the way your baby fit perfectly in your arms. Images that will feel just as beautiful years from now as they do today.

You don’t need to prepare perfectly. You don’t need a “perfect” baby. You simply need to show up—and I’ll take care of the rest. If you’re expecting and beginning to think about documenting this season, I’d love to create something timeless for your family.
