Why Your Nursery Doesn't Need to Be Finished for Newborn Photos

When you're preparing for a new baby, it can feel like there are a hundred things on your to do list. The crib still needs to be assembled. The artwork is sitting in boxes. The curtains haven't been hung. Maybe there's a rocker in the middle of the room waiting to be put together, or the changing table is still covered in baby shower gifts. Somewhere in the middle of all of that, you remember you have newborn photos scheduled. If your first thought is, "Maybe we should reschedule until the nursery is done," let me reassure you: Your nursery does not need to be finished to create beautiful, timeless newborn photographs.

Years from now, when your child looks through these photographs, they won't notice whether the shelves were styled or if the dresser hardware had finally arrived. They'll notice the way you looked at them. The way they fit perfectly in your arms. The tiny fingers wrapped around yours. The love that filled your home during those first few weeks. Those are the details that become priceless.

That story doesn't require a magazine worthy house.

Some of my favorite images have been made in homes where:

• The nursery wasn't even painted yet.
• Boxes from baby showers were still stacked in the corner.
• Dad was building the crib the night before.
• The family had just moved.
• Baby was sleeping in a bassinet next to Mom and Dad's bed instead of the nursery.

None of those things mattered once we started photographing what was truly important.

You might be surprised by how little space we actually need. Beautiful natural light from a bedroom window. A neutral wall. A cozy bed. Mom's arms. Dad's shoulder. That's often all it takes. If there are areas of your home you'd rather not include, we'll simply choose different spaces. Most families are amazed by how many beautiful spots we discover throughout your home.

While it's wonderful to capture a few images in your baby's room if you'd like, many favorite photographs happen elsewhere. Parents snuggled together on the bed. Siblings peeking over the edge of the mattress. A quiet moment by the living room windows. A hallway flooded with soft morning light.

Your nursery is just one small part of your home, and certainly not the only place where memories are made.

Before every session, I'll help you decide which rooms photograph best and offer simple suggestions if anything needs to be moved.

Usually it's as easy as:

• Opening the blinds.
• Clearing a nightstand.
• Moving a laundry basket.
• Tidying one or two surfaces.

That's it. No deep cleaning. No decorating marathon. No pressure to have everything "finished."

The first days with your baby pass in a blur of feedings, sleepy cuddles, and learning one another. Waiting until the nursery feels "done" often means waiting until this season has already slipped away. Your photographs won't be meaningful because every room was perfect. They'll be meaningful because they remind you exactly how it felt to bring your baby home. That's a memory worth preserving, unfinished nursery and all.
