There is something especially sweet about welcoming a baby in January. The holidays are over, the calendar feels a little quieter, and winter gives us permission to slow down and stay home. When you have a brand new baby, that slower pace can feel exactly right. While January might not immediately come to mind as the “perfect” month for photos, it is actually one of my favorite times of year for an in-home newborn session.

There Is Nowhere You Need to Be

One of the best parts of an in home newborn session is that you do not have to pack up your baby and head anywhere. In January, that feels especially wonderful. No bundling your newborn into layers. No worrying about icy sidewalks or freezing temperatures. No loading everyone into the car and hoping you remembered everything. I come to you. You get to stay warm, comfortable, and tucked into the place where you are already spending most of these early days together.

Winter Light Can Be Beautiful

I think parents are sometimes surprised by this one. Winter may have shorter days, but that does not mean we cannot create beautiful photographs inside your home. January light can be incredibly soft and gentle, which works beautifully with the quiet, natural feeling of a newborn session. I will look throughout your home for the spaces with the best available light. We may photograph in the nursery, your bedroom, the living room, or somewhere you never would have thought to use. Your home does not need enormous windows or perfect light in every room. We simply follow the good light.

Your Home Is Part of the Story

January newborn sessions have a coziness that is hard to replicate any other time of year. Baby curled up against Dad. A sleepy morning in your bedroom. Older siblings climbing onto the bed to get a closer look. Your newborn tucked into your arms in the nursery you spent months preparing. These photographs are not just about what your baby looked like when they were tiny. They preserve what life felt like during those first weeks together. And in the middle of a New England winter, home is very much part of that story.

You Do Not Need to Wait for Spring

If you are expecting a winter baby, you might be tempted to wait until the weather gets warmer for professional photos. Babies change so quickly. Those tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, fuzzy shoulders, curled up legs, and the way they fit perfectly against your chest are all incredibly fleeting. There will be plenty of opportunities for outdoor family photos when the weather warms up. Your newborn will only be this little once.

January Is Made for Slowing Down

Maybe that is what I love most about January newborn sessions. There is no pressure to make the day into something bigger than it needs to be. You can stay home. Keep the coffee nearby. Snuggle your baby. Let older siblings come and go as they need to. We can take our time and create photographs that feel relaxed, warm, and true to this season of your family's life. If you are expecting a January baby, now is a wonderful time to reserve your newborn session. Newborn sessions are typically booked during pregnancy based on your due date, with the exact session date determined once your baby arrives. Your January may be cold outside, but inside, you will have every reason to stay cozy.
