There is something about the beach that feels especially fitting for maternity photos. The soft light, neutral colors, open space, and movement from the water create a beautiful backdrop without taking attention away from what matters most, you and this season of waiting for your baby.
Why Choose the Beach for Your Maternity Session?
Beach maternity sessions have a naturally relaxed feel. There’s room to walk, move, and simply be together rather than feeling like every photograph needs to be perfectly posed. I love incorporating gentle movement into maternity sessions, walking along the shoreline, letting a dress move in the breeze, or photographing those quieter moments between you and your partner. The result is a gallery that feels polished and beautiful while still feeling like you. The beach also gives us a soft, simple color palette. Sand, water, sky, and dune grass pair beautifully with the light neutrals and muted colors that photograph so well and help create timeless images.
What to Wear for Beach Maternity Photos
Flowy dresses are always a favorite for maternity sessions at the beach. Linen, cotton, soft knits, and dresses with a little movement photograph beautifully in the coastal breeze. Cream, ivory, soft blue, blush, muted greens, and other gentle neutrals all work wonderfully against the sand and water. I usually recommend avoiding very bright colors or busy patterns so that the focus stays on you and your growing family. And bare feet are almost always encouraged.
The Best Time for Beach Maternity Photos
For most expecting mothers, somewhere around 28–34 weeks is a wonderful time for maternity photos. Your belly is beautifully defined, but you’re generally still comfortable enough to walk and move around during your session. Beach sessions are typically scheduled later in the day when the sun is lower and the light becomes softer and warmer. That beautiful evening light is a huge part of what gives beach photographs their dreamy, effortless quality.
Documenting the Season Before Everything Changes
Pregnancy can feel long while you’re in it, but it becomes such a small chapter once your baby arrives. Maternity photos give you something tangible from that in between season, the anticipation, the excitement, and the last little stretch of life before your family changes. If you’re expecting and dreaming of a relaxed maternity session by the water, I’d love to document it for you. I photograph maternity and newborn sessions throughout the Boston area, South Shore, and beyond.
