Every year, the holidays seem to come with the same question: what do you give the people who already have everything?

When there is a new baby in the family, the answer might be simpler than you think.

Photographs from your newborn session can become some of the most meaningful gifts you give this holiday season, especially for grandparents and family members who would choose another photo of that sweet new baby over just about anything else under the tree.

Give them something they’ll actually keep

Photographs are different.

A framed image of a grandparent holding their newest grandchild, a photograph of all the grandchildren together, or simply a beautiful portrait of your new baby becomes part of their home. It is something they’ll see every day, not something they’ll eventually need to find a place to store. As the years pass, those photographs only become more meaningful.

Your newborn session is about more than birth announcements

When planning a newborn session, most parents are understandably thinking about preserving this stage for themselves. The tiny fingers. The sleepy stretches. The way your baby fits perfectly against your chest.

But those same photographs also give you something incredibly personal to share with the people who love your baby, too. A favorite image can become a framed print for Grandma and Grandpa, a small album for a great-grandparent, or even part of your family’s holiday card. One session can create gifts for several people on your list while still preserving this chapter for your own family.

Don’t forget the grandparents

If grandparents will be visiting during your in-home newborn session, consider inviting them to step into a few photographs. They don’t need to coordinate outfits perfectly or be photographed for the entire session. Sometimes just a few simple images of a grandparent holding their new grandbaby are enough. Those are often the photographs that become priceless much sooner than we expect.

Printed photographs feel different

We all have thousands of photographs sitting on our phones, but there is something completely different about holding one in your hands. A photograph becomes part of your family’s story when it is printed, framed, placed on a nightstand, or tucked into an album that gets pulled out year after year. That is one of the reasons I love offering albums and framed artwork from newborn sessions. They turn photographs from something you scroll past into something you live with. When you give one as a gift, you are giving something that was created specifically for that person and that family.

If you’re expecting a baby this fall...

Your newborn photographs could arrive at just the right time to become some of your favorite holiday gifts.

And while you certainly don’t need another reason to document those first few weeks, knowing that Grandma’s Christmas present might already be taken care of is a pretty nice bonus. Because really, once there’s a new baby in the family, what could possibly compete?
