Bringing home a new baby is a beautiful whirlwind. Between feedings, diaper changes, and soaking in all those newborn snuggles, the thought of getting ready for photos can feel like one more thing on your to-do list.
The good news? Preparing for an in-home newborn session is much simpler than most parents expect. My goal is to create a relaxed experience that feels natural and enjoyable, so you can focus on what matters most, loving on your newest family member.
Feed Baby Before the Session
If possible, try to feed your baby about 20–30 minutes before I arrive. A full belly often helps babies settle into a deep, sleepy state, making it easier to capture those cozy wrapped portraits and peaceful family moments.
Don't worry if baby needs to eat again during the session, that's completely normal. We always follow your baby's lead.
Let the Natural Light In
One of the reasons I love photographing families in their own homes is the beautiful natural light.
Before I arrive, simply open the blinds and curtains in the rooms with the best window light. I photograph almost entirely with natural light to create the soft, timeless look you see throughout my portfolio.
Don't Stress About Having a Perfectly Clean Home
This is the biggest worry I hear from new parents, so let me put your mind at ease. Your home does not need to look like it belongs in a magazine. I'll help choose the best locations with the prettiest light, and we can easily move small items, tuck away distractions, or photograph around everyday clutter. Your baby's nursery, your bed, or a cozy corner of the living room are often all we need. The focus is always your family, not whether there are dishes in the sink.
Keep Clothing Simple and Timeless
Soft, neutral colors photograph beautifully and keep the attention where it belongs, on your connection. Creams, whites, light beige, soft gray, muted blues, and gentle earth tones all work wonderfully together. Comfortable fabrics like cotton, linen, and knit textures add warmth without distracting from your images. Avoid large logos, busy patterns, and bright neon colors whenever possible.
Relax and Enjoy These Moments
You don't need to know how to pose, and your children don't need to sit perfectly still. I'll gently guide you every step of the way while leaving room for authentic moments to unfold naturally. Some of my favorite images come from quiet snuggles, tiny fingers wrapped around yours, or the way your older child can't stop peeking at their new baby. These first days go by so quickly. My hope is that your session feels less like a photoshoot and more like an opportunity to slow down and simply be together.
