What If My Baby Is Fussy During Newborn Photos?

(And Why You Don’t Need to Worry as Much as You Think)

One of the most common concerns I hear from new parents is this:

“What if my baby doesn’t cooperate?”

If you’re wondering this, you’re not alone, and more importantly, it’s completely normal. Newborns are unpredictable. They’re adjusting to the world, and no two babies are the same. But the truth is, a “fussy” baby doesn’t mean you won’t get beautiful images. In fact, some of the most meaningful photos come from these in-between, real moments.

What Does “Fussy” Actually Mean?

Fussy doesn’t mean something is wrong.

It usually just means your baby is:

  • Hungry
  • Needing to be held
  • Adjusting to a new environment
  • Wanting comfort and closeness

And all of those things are completely expected. I approach every session knowing that your baby will need breaks, snuggles, and flexibility. That’s not a disruption to the session, it is the session.

Newborn Sessions Are Designed Around Your Baby

In-home newborn sessions are intentionally slow and flexible. There’s no rushing, no strict timeline, and no pressure for your baby to “perform.” If your baby needs to feed, we pause. If they need to be held, we lean into that. If they need time to settle, we give it. Some babies sleep the entire session. Some need a little more support. Both are completely okay.

You Don’t Need a Perfectly Sleepy Baby for Beautiful Photos

While those curled-up, sleepy images are lovely, they’re not the only moments worth capturing.

Some of the most meaningful images come from:

  • A baby resting calmly in your arms
  • Gentle eye contact during a quiet moment
  • The way you instinctively soothe and hold them
  • Tiny expressions and stretches between movements

These are the moments that feel the most real when you look back.

How I Help Keep Your Baby Calm During a Session

Over time, I’ve learned that small, thoughtful adjustments make a big difference. During your session, I naturally guide things like:

  • Keeping the space warm and comfortable
  • Using soft, natural light to create a calming environment
  • Gentle wrapping techniques that help babies feel secure
  • Slow, minimal transitions between poses
  • Letting baby stay close to you

There’s no forcing, no overstimulation, just a calm, steady pace that supports you and your baby.

What If Your Baby Has a Harder Day?

There are always moments in every session where a baby needs extra comfort. That doesn’t mean the session isn’t working. It means you’re in the early days of parenting. Those pauses, the feeding, rocking, settling, are part of your story. And sometimes, those are the moments that feel the most meaningful later on.

Your Only Job Is to Love Your Baby

You don’t need to manage every detail or worry about how your baby will behave. That’s my role. My job is to gently guide the session, read your baby’s cues, and create space for everything to unfold naturally. You just get to be present.

Because This Stage Isn’t About Perfection

It’s about connection. No matter how your baby shows up that day, sleepy, alert, or somewhere in between, we will create something honest, soft, and lasting.
